Matthew Clinton Smith

Matthew was raised in Folsom, California, before moving to the small Northern California community of Colusa. During his youth, he developed an interest in public speaking, advocacy, and leadership and competed at the national level in parliamentary procedure — developing skills that would later become central to his work as a courtroom advocate: thinking quickly, understanding procedure, communicating clearly, and remaining composed under pressure.

Matthew attended San Diego State University, where he earned a degree in Economics with a minor in Russian Language. His economics training sharpened the analytical thinking he applies to complex criminal cases — evaluating evidence, identifying inconsistencies, and understanding the financial and systemic factors that often run beneath the surface of a prosecution.

Before becoming a lawyer, Matthew learned criminal defense from the ground up. While attending law school in Northern California, he worked as a criminal defense investigator — interviewing witnesses, examining physical evidence, reviewing police investigations, locating evidence, and assisting attorneys in preparing cases for trial.

That experience became one of the foundations of his approach to practicing law. Rather than viewing a case solely through police reports and charging documents, Matthew approaches criminal cases with an investigator's mindset — asking what happened, what was overlooked, whether witnesses are reliable, and whether the physical evidence supports their accounts.

His investigative work placed him directly inside some of the most serious criminal cases. In one murder prosecution, Matthew testified as an investigator at trial concerning his investigative work for the defense. After two trials, the defendant was ultimately found not guilty. The experience reinforced a principle that continues to influence his practice: serious criminal accusations must be tested through investigation, cross-examination, and the adversarial process rather than accepted at face value.

Matthew attended CAL Northern School of Law in Chico while continuing his work in criminal defense and was admitted to the State Bar of California in May 2011.

After becoming an attorney, Matthew continued building his career in Northern California, working with law offices in downtown Sacramento and Glenn County and representing individuals facing criminal accusations throughout the region.

He eventually partnered with longtime Yuba City attorney Jesse Santana, joining a criminal-defense practice with deep roots in the Yuba-Sutter legal community. When Santana later became a judge, Matthew continued the firm's longstanding tradition of providing criminal defense representation in the North State.

Today, Matthew practices with Matt Smith Lawyer, located in downtown Yuba City. His practice focuses substantially on criminal defense, including serious felony and violent-crime cases, while also representing clients in personal-injury matters. Matthew previously practiced with Beauchamp and Smith Law Firm, P.C., which operated until August 2026.

Over the course of his career, Matthew has handled matters ranging from relatively minor criminal charges to cases carrying life-changing consequences. His criminal defense experience includes 8 murder cases and countless attempted murder cases to date, as well as serious felony prosecutions, sex crimes, domestic violence, firearm allegations, drug offenses, federal charges, juvenile proceedings, appeals, post-conviction matters, and other complex criminal litigation.

The significance of his cases has drawn national and international media attention. His cases have been covered by National Geographic, HBO's VICE, Discovery Channel's Investigation Discovery, CBS, FOX, ABC, People Magazine, and the New York Post, among other outlets. He has appeared on television programs including In Pursuit with John Walsh and Wild Justice, and has been interviewed by local and regional news organizations including Univision, KRCR, and KCRA.

Matthew stays current with ongoing developments in criminal law and forensic science, allowing him to critically evaluate the scientific and technical evidence prosecutors rely on — from DNA and toxicology to digital forensics and accident reconstruction — and to challenge it effectively at trial.

He is a member of The National Trial Lawyers, an invitation-only professional organization recognizing the top trial attorneys in the country. Membership reflects a demonstrated commitment to excellence in trial advocacy and a track record of results in serious civil and criminal cases.

His experience also extends to appellate advocacy. In M.D. Doe v. Marysville Joint Unified School District, a case decided by the California Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, Matthew served as counsel for the appellants in a matter that resulted in a published appellate opinion.

Matthew has also advised clients on cannabis business and legal representation, an area of law that sits at the intersection of rapidly evolving state regulation, local licensing, and federal criminal exposure. As California's cannabis regulatory framework has shifted, he has counseled individuals and businesses navigating the complex compliance landscape that governs licensed operators.

His work in this space drew the attention of NPR, where he was interviewed as a legal commentator on a significant change in cannabis regulation — offering perspective on how the regulatory shift affected businesses and individuals operating in the California cannabis market.

This background gives Matthew a practical understanding of the legal risks cannabis businesses face, including the potential for criminal prosecution under state or federal law, licensing disputes, and the compliance obligations that licensed operators must meet to remain in good standing.

Matthew Clinton Smith is an active member of the State Bar of California, State Bar No. 276024, and has practiced law in California since 2011.

He is also admitted to practice in federal court before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California and the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, allowing him to represent clients in both California state and federal proceedings.

Matthew continues to live in Northern California with his family and remains active in the communities where he practices. He supports local nonprofit and community organizations and serves as a delegate for the Unity Bar Association of Sutter County.

Away from the courtroom, Matthew continues to enjoy many of the outdoor interests that have been part of his life in Northern California. He is an avid fisherman and recreational target shooter and values spending time outdoors with his family.
